Chapter 92

I wanted Luke to attend the wedding, but he adamantly refused.

“Are you kidding? I can’t hang with all those snooty people,” he argued. “Why can’t things stay like they are? Just you, me and Glo?”

No explanation I gave could convince him that this would be a good thing for all of us. After the wedding and honeymoon, we would all move into the new house downtown. I knew he was extremely apprehensive about it. I did my best to put his fears at rest, which was hard as I had some serious fears of my own!

Monica became more testy and sharp-tongued as each day passed. I tried my best to be understanding. I continually told myself she was just under a lot of pressure. I hadn’t been able to spend much time with her lately; she was always running here or there, talking with florists and caterers. She had numerous dress fittings, and the list of things to be done seemed endless.

Confused and frustrated, I felt like nothing more than an observer. I kept telling myself things would all work out. I NEEDED everything to work out. All I had ever wanted was to be happy with a family of my own.

More often than not, when I visited, I spent most of my time in the study talking with Ed. We became good friends over the ensuing weeks.

I finally gave up trying to be alone with my wife-to-be. She was just too busy, and frankly, appeared disinterested. This worried me, but I pushed these thoughts aside.
